Hypnosis
What is Hypnosis?
Most people's only exposure to hypnosis takes place
in ways that typically both intrigue and frighten them. They often
see hypnosis in films and television shows where it is portrayed
as a frightening instrument of mind control. They see it as a tool
used by unscrupulous villains to enslave the will of helpless victims,
or they see stage show artistes who use hypnosis to make people
do and say things that seem well outside of the realm of what that
person would likely ever do or say under normal conditions. So for
many people hypnosis is a curiosity, one of those things not unlike
other seeming mystical and unexplainable phenomena. This is unfortunate
because in fact hypnosis is a serious therapeutic tool that can help
people to overcome many psychological, emotional and some physical
problems.
Hypnosis is a natural state of mind which we all experience
in every day life. For example, we may have become completely engrossed
in a book or film and lose track of time. The driver of a vehicle
can arrive at their destination not remembering the route they have
taken. All hypnosis does is extend the time when we are in this natural
mind state, enabling us to focus unhindered on our inner feelings.
Most people are pleasantly surprised by how natural they feel and
certainly how fully aware they are of everything they are experiencing.
Hypnosis is better described as extended relaxation, enabling
us to focus on our inner thoughts and feelings.
The Conscious and the Subconscious mind
Our conscious mind deals with our daily lives and how
we interact with the world around us. The subconscious part deals
with the running and maintenance of our bodily functions. It also
measures our emotional reactions to events and stores them in our
memory. This combination usually serves us well, but sometimes our
usual ways of coping with emotional difficulties let us down. Hypnosis
can provide the key to the subconscious and facilitate new ways of
dealing with difficulties.
